Along the Treasure Coast we are lucky to have such a rich and diverse environment. We are surrounded by water. We have the Atlantic Ocean, The Indian River Lagoon National Estuary, the St. Lucie River Estuary, and Lake Okeechobee. The Gulf Stream comes in close to shore in our area bringing many species up from the Caribbean. We are also on the border of the temperate and tropical regions. Because of this we have more species of plants and animals than any other estuary in North America.
Our estuaries contain rich mangrove marshes and seagrass beds. Our nearshore waters contain the unusual Sabellariid worm reefs. Our local waters contain many natural and artificial reefs.
